SMART rescuers retrieve stranded cat

  • Members of the L.A. Animal Services Small Animal Rescue Team (SMART) climbed to the top of a 2-story building to coax a cat named Gizmo down. The cat had been on the roof for nearly a week and eagerly walked to its rescuer before being put in a bag and lowered to the ground.

Fish found off Long Beach with tumor

  • Officials at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium are trying to figure out why a white croaker fish caught in the Long Beach harbor near the Belmont Pier had a large growth on its head. White croakers are susceptible to DDT found in the water and originally believed that the fatty mass may be a tumor.

  • Celebrating the annual migration of the gray whale, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro held their annual Whale Fiesta Sunday. The event featured many educational and fun activities for families such as a contest to build sea creatures out of duct tape, arts and crafts, music and many hands on displays.

Gray whale watching off Palos Verdes

  • Docents, volunteers and staff of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium took their annual whale watching training excursion Monday on board the Voyager out of Redondo Beach Marina and were not disappointed. The group saw 11 gray whales, one fin whale, sea lions , birds and hundreds of dolphins on their 3-hour trip. So far, according to the whale census takers at Point Vicente, 134 gray whales have been spotted off the coast this month which sets a December record for the southern migration which goes from Alaska to Baja California. Voyager Excursions will begin making daily whale watching trips on Saturday, December 31. For more info, go to http://www.voyagerexcursions.com/. Companies in Marina Del Rey, Long Beach and San Pedro also offer whale watching trips.

Dead whale towed out to sea

  • After several attempts, L.A. County lifeguards successfully pulled a dead humpback whale from the rocks at Royal Palms State Beach during Thursdays high tide. The whale was discovered Saturday and had been severed in half, probably after a collision with a ship at sea.

Missing for 4 years, dog is reunited with family

Blue whale feeding frenzy
